What are talents?
- Our talents are our natural ability to do something.
- God gave each and every person different talents and gifts.
- The things you enjoy, and the things you are good at doing, are all things that God has gifted to you. These gifts and talents, when used right, can add beauty to your life and to all the lives around you!
How to discover your talents and gifts?
Answer the following questions:
- What do you enjoy doing?
- What activities do you lean towards when you have free time?
- What volunteer opportunities do you see yourself doing and which of them make you feel good?
- When someone complements you (says something good about you) what does he/she say? What does he/she like/admire about you?
- What activities or responsibilities do you find unenjoyable?
- God has gifted us with the ability to learn and as we grow, we develop new talents and skills. Such as when we were all babies, we learned to speak, walk, and play. Those little moments that seems so easy to do now were once our biggest obstacles but now they have become our achievements.
- Sometimes God sends a messenger to open up our eyes to our talents. Listen and observe what someone might say or ask. Through trial and error eventually the talents can be discovered. One must pursue and not be discouraged. It does take time. Always pray and ask for guidance. Eventually you will be able to discover them!
How can you use your talents to serve God and the Church?
- Pray: “Lord, what do you want me to do?” +Acts 9:5
- Be intentional in finding ways to serve God; He gives us opportunities to serve
- Take initiative, we should not wait for someone to ask us to help, but offer it ourselves!
- Pray and ask God to provide opportunities and pray that He helps us notice those opportunities.
- Make it a point to bring up your desire to serve to your servant and to your father of confession.
Examples of Talents and Service
There are many people in the Bible who used their talents to serve God. Can you think of any?
Some examples:
- Joseph the Carpenter used his talents to teach child Jesus how to make and repair things out of wood.
- Lydia, a seller of purple (Acts 16:14) – used her gifts to hold a church in her house
- The wise men – were wise and mathematically talented astrologers who used their gifts to find Jesus
- Solomon the wise- prayed for wisdom so that he could help serve God’s people
- Deborah, Judge, Compassionate leader, and mother to Israel
- Priscilla and Aquilla – a couple who helped establish the church, they were considered great helpers (servants) to God and the church (Romans 16:3)
- Timothy and Maura – protected the books of the church
Within the bible we are told to use our talents and gifts the Lord gives us. The tricky part can be finding our talents. We are not given a list of our talents when we are born, we need to find them on our own. Our first and most important way to find our talents is to pray. In Matthew 7:7 tells us to ask, seek and knock. We can pray about and seek out our talents. God can give us wisdom about what our talents are. We can trust the Holy Spirit to lead us to use our gifts.
