Notes for Servants
i How smart Solomon's request was! He did not desire wealth. He did not want the heads of his enemies. He only asked for wisdom. Examine the types of your requests and concerns, are they spiritual or according to the desires of the flesh?
i Wisdom is necessary for the spiritual road, and for everyday life. Pray the Lord, the Father of Lights, to grant you wisdom that you may gain your eternal life.
i St. Anthony taught his disciples that wisdom and separation are the most important virtues. Prayer, fasting, abstinence, and the life of poverty, and charity without separation can destroy man instead of rescuing him if they are practised with pride and haughtiness.

Story Time
Solomon became king after David his father died. (Describe how he was enthroned...) He went to Gibeon to pray and ask the Lord to give him the grace of work. The Lord appeared to him and asked what he wanted to be given.
(Conversation between the Lord and Solomon.)
He did not ask for wealth the death of his enemies or a long life but he asked for wisdom.) The Lord was pleased and gave him everything. He began his rule with wisdom. Everyone noticed it and thanked the Lord for their King.
One day, two women came and presented themselves before King Solomon. They were weeping. They complained. They were living in the same house. They gave birth to two baby boys. One night this woman accidentally rolled over on her baby and smothered it... "She got up during the night, took my son from my side while I was asleep and carried him to her bed... then she put the dead child in my bed. The next morning when I woke up and was going to feed my baby, I saw that it was dead. I screamed." (Describe the mother's feelings) "I looked at it more closely and saw that it was not my child. This is your son, where is my son? No, this is my son.." (Describe the feelings of the real mother, and their quarrel) The false mother said that the living baby was hers. The people standing were listening in amazement. How will this problem be solved? What will the king do? He will prove the truth of this woman's words or that woman's words. They were all perplexed, tears through the discussion.
The king raised his heart to the Lord and prayed for wisdom. He sent for a sword and when it was brought he said, "Cut the living child in two and give each woman half of it." The real mother, her heart full of love for her son, said to the king, "Please your Majesty, don't kill the child: Give it to her." But the false mother said, "Don't give it to either of us, go ahead and cut it in two." (Describe the feelings of the real mother and the indifference of the false mother)... Then Solomon said, "Don't kill the child! Give it to the first woman, she is its real mother." When the people of Israel heard of Solomon's decision, they were all filled with deep respect for him, because they knew that God had given him the wisdom to settle disputes fairly. They said, "The Lord gives wisdom to anyone who asks for it."
