39 - Jesus Goes up to Heaven
Introduction
Briefly review the lessons about the Resurrection and events leading to ascension. Tell the children that this week we are celebrating the Ascension. We will learn about the Feast of the Ascension. Learn that Jesus is in Heaven and also with us everywhere.
Lesson Outline
It was 40 days after Jesus had risen. The friends of Jesus were together with Him on a mountain. Jesus put His hands on them and blessed them. He told them to tell all the people about Him and His love for the world. He also told them: “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matt. 28:20. He also told them that He has to go up to heaven to God, His Father, and that they do not need to be sad at all but happy for Him. Then, as they were looking at Jesus, they saw Him going up…up….up… into the clouds, until they could not see Him anymore. They stood and looked up for a long time into the sky. Then, suddenly, they saw two angels standing next to them. They told them: “Why do you stand here staring into heaven? Jesus will someday come back again on the clouds and everyone will see Him in the sky.” Then they went back to Jerusalem and they were all praying together. We call the time when the Lord went up to heaven, the Ascension. He went up to heaven to prepare a wonderful place for us. Our Lord is in heaven, but also with us everywhere we go, because He is our God.
