Story Time

One day Jesus entered a house in Capernaum. Many people gathered around Him, including sick people and people who loved Him. The Lord received and welcomed them all, until the house became crowded with people.

There was a man in Capernaum who had been ill for a long time. He and his relatives heard that Christ was in the city and that He was in one of the houses. The paralyzed man said to his friends, "Have mercy upon me and take me to Jesus so that He may heal me." Four of his friends put him on a mat because he was completely paralyzed and could move either his hands or legs.

  1. What is the name of the city?
  2. Where did Jesus go?
  3. Who carried the paralyzed man?

The friends found that the house was extremely crowded with people both inside and outside. They climbed up a ladder to the top of the house. They removed some tiles from the top of the roof and then lowered their friend in front of Jesus with the aid of some ropes. Jesus looked at the paralyzed man, then he looked up to where the four friends were standing. Jesus smiled at them with love. He looked at the paralyzed man and said, "Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee".

The people who were present murmured and said to themselves, "God is the only One who can forgive sins." The Lord Jesus knew what they were thinking and he said to them, "Is it easier to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven, or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk?’" They did not answer and kept silent.

  1. Why did the people murmur? What did they say?
  2. What did Jesus say to them?
  3. Where did the paralyzed man descend from? How did he come down?
  4. Let us say the verse together, “Son, be of good cheer...”

Jesus told the paralyzed man to pick up his bed and go home. These words sent a wonderful power into the body of the paralyzed man. He stood up, thanked God, picked up his mat and went home happily, singing hymns. His friends also went home joyously, while the people who witnessed the miraculous deed wondered greatly and glorified God. All the people murmured to one another, saying, "We have never seen such a thing".

  1. What did the Lord Jesus say to the paralyzed man?
  2. How did the man go home? What did the people say?
  3. Are there any sick people in your family? What service can you offer them?
