Story Time
St. Mark is anEvangelist (Evangelist = preacher) - He is the Evangelist of Egypt. He also wrote
the Gospel of St. Mark. He is an apostle. He was sent to preach in many countries, among which was
Egypt. He is a martyr. Today we celebrate the feast of his martyrdom ... He departed to heaven on the
30th of Barmudah (8th of May).
Whenhe was a youngman, St. Mark lived in the North of Africa withhis parents who were Jews.
The family was rich, and St. Mark was brought up in faith. The barbarians attacked the city and robbed
the people. The family left for Palestine. That was a Divine arrangement so that St. Mark might meet the
Lord Jesus when he was still on earth. (Describe the feelings of the family when they piled their things to
leave - sufferings - complete trust in God - they did not understand why ... The Lord helped them)
Jesus was preaching and Mark was with him. Jesus chose him to be one of the seventy
apostles... St. Mark was happy... The Lord was arrested. He was crucified. He rose fromthe dead and
appeared several times. He sent His disciples to preach to the world.
Mark went withPaul to Asia Minor... Thenhe went to Cyprus, then to Alexandria. In Alexandria
his shoe was tom. (Describe his feelings as he was alone in Alexandria... He prayed to the Lord to guide
him). He met Inianus and began preaching the word. He baptised Inianus and his household. He
established the church ofEgypt... The churchgrew, developed and spread all over the country. St. Mark
rejoiced. He ordained Inianus Patriarch.
St. Mark ordained priests and deacons then he went to the North of Africa and then to Rome
where he met Peter and Paul. He stayed with them till they were martyred. Then he went back to Egypt
and found the church flourishing. He rejoiced and thanked the Lord.
