Story Time
Jesus took Simon Peter, James and his brotherJohn into the mountains withhim. As they climbed
higherthe air grew cooler and lighter, and the country stretched out beneath them. It was evening. Jesus
looked down onto the Promised Land, the land of Israel. Its ridges and valleys lay sharp and beautiful
under the setting sun. Then darkness closed in on them. It was night. They were high above the world,
high above the homes of men.
Peter, James and John leaned back inthe shelter of a boulder; theywere very tired. Jesus prayed
to God. Suddenly his whole appearance changed; his face shone with the glory of God, and his clothes
were so brilliantly white that they blazed with light. Moses and Elijah stood beside him, talking to him.
"Oh, Master!" Peter cried out. "It is wonderful to be here. If you like, I could put up three
tabernacles, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."He was so excited and afraid that he hardly
knew what he wassaying. While he was talking a bright cloud of light came down over the mountain and
covered them, so that they could see nothing. A voice said out of the cloud: "This is my beloved Son.
Listen to him."
The three disciplesfellto the ground, hiding their faces. At last they looked up. Jesus was standing
alone, a little way off. There was a sense of stillness and peace in the air. Jesus came back to them and
touched them gently. Stand up," he said. "Don't be afraid. But don't tell anyone about this yet."
