Story Time
kindness
During lunch Russ called home and said, “Mom, I have to have my game uniform washed in time
for practice this afternoon. Coach told us we’re taking pictures.”
“Russ, when did the coach tell you this?”
“I don’t no. Last week I think.”
“And you’re just now telling me? That’s less than three hours from now
“Sorry Mom, but I gotta have it.”
Mrs. Bryce drops off the clean uniform and gets over to the junior high just in time to pick up her
daughter, Michelle. Halfway home, Michelle gasps, “Oh, Mom! I almost forgot. I’ve got to go the library
and photocopy an article for my government class”
“But, Michelle, I’ve got to get home. The wallpaper guy is supposed to call between 3:45 and
4:00.”
“Mommm! IfI don’t get that article,I’ll get a zero on my homework assignment. Do youwant me
to flunk?”
Atsupper Mr. Bryce doesn’tsaymuchexcept to note that “the roast is kinda tough tonight, honey.
What happened?”
Everyone is shocked when Mrs. Bryce buries her face in her napkin and then leaves the dinner
table sobbing.
Talk about It
1. Why do you think Mrs. Bryce got so upset?
2. What, if anything, was wrong with the way Russ, Michelle, and Mr. Bryce approached their
mom/wife?
3. What are some ways you have failed to show kindness lately to your fellow family members?
4. What are some things you could do today or this week to be more kind at home?
Apply It
If our faith in Christ is real, it will usually prove itself at home, in our relationships with those who
knowus best. Ideally Christian parents and Christian children will relate to eachother withthoughtfulness
and love. This will happen if both parents and childrenput the others’ interests above their own-that is, if
they submit to one another. In Colossians 3:12-17.
Discussion
1 - Follow up the story by talking about it with the children.
2 - Continue the discussion while they do the activity.
