Story Time

King Nebuchadnezzar had a gold statue made. He ordered all the people to bow down and worship the statue as soon as they heard the sound of the trumpet, and other instruments. Anyone who would not worship the statue would be thrown into the blazing furnace. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego did not worship the statue. When the King knew that the three young men refused to worship the statue, he become outraged and threatened that he would throw them into the blazing furnace. But the three young men said that their God, whom they worshipped, would be able to rescue them from the blazing furnace and save them from his power. Each one prayed: "I fear no evil."

1. What is the King’s name? What did he do? What was his religion?
2. What are the names of the three young men?
3. To whom did they pray? Let us say together: "I fear no evil."
(The servant can explain the situation which expresses their courage and their loyalty to God, and the children can act it.)

The King lost his temper and his face turned red with anger at the three young men because of their undying faith and the way they answered him. He ordered his men to heat the furnace seven times hotter than usual. Then, he commanded the strongest men in his army to tie the three men up and throw them into the blazing furnace. The flames slew the guards who took the men to the furnace. When the King looked, he saw that the men were not tied anymore. Also, there were four men walking about in the fire. The king was amazed ... the king and his men heard the three men singing a hymn of praise, "Come O righteous people, Come..." The king ordered them to come out of the furnace. The three men came out. The fourth man was like the Son of God. He noticed that the hair on their heads were not singed either. Then, the King glorified the Lord.
1. Why did the three young men refuse to worship the statue?
2. What did they say to the King? How did the king punish them?
3. Did the fire affect them? Who was walking with them in the furnace?
