Story Time
When Jesus was twelve years old he went with his parents to Jerusalem. It was their custom to go there every year to give thanks to God at the feast of the Passover. He joined in offering the sacrifice of the lamb, honey and wine, and ate the crisp, hard, unleavened bread that reminded the Jews of their flight from Egypt. Jesus was very happy to go to Jerusalem to pray in the Temple.
The festival lasted seven days. When the festival was over Mary and Joseph along with all the group from their home town set out to go back to Nazareth.
Usually men walk together, women walk together and children also walk together playing and having fun. After some time Mary was looking for Jesus but she did not found him. "Where is Jesus?" Mary asked Joseph. "He must have gone ahead with some of the children," he said.
But when they looked for Jesus among the crowds of children they did not find him. Deeply worried, Mary and Joseph hurried back to Jerusalem. They looking along the road full of travellers. They looked everywhere, but they did not find him. Then they went to the Temple, their last hope.
"There he is, look, in Solomon's Porch!" cried Joseph. Jesus was sitting among the teachers who taught in the Temple, as if he were one of them. He was asking them questions and listening to their answers, and everyone who heard him was amazed at his wisdom.
"My son, what are you doing?" Mary cried. "We have been so worried about you!"
Calmly and gently Jesus replied, "Why did you look for me? Didn't you know that I was bound to be in my father's house?"
Then he went back with them to Nazareth. As he grew older, he learned to become a carpenter. But it was obvious that God had given him special wisdom and grace, and everyone who knew him, loved him.
