Story Time
In the southern kingdom of Judah, Athaliah, the daughter of Jezebel, wanted to be queen. She had every rival killed, including her own grandsons. Jezebel’s daughter managed to save her smallest son, Joash, and hid him in the temple, where he was brought up by the high priest, Jehoiada.
For six years, Athaliah ruled as queen of Judah. Then, Jehoiada called all the royal guards and the priests to the temple and led them before Joash, the late King's son. He handed each captain a shield and spear, and reminded the soldiers that the weapons had been King David's and that the boy was of David's family. Then, Jehoiada placed the crown on his head and everyone shouted: "Long live the king!"
Athaliah heard the shouting and hurried to the temple. "Treason!" She called out, as she saw the new King standing by a pillar. But, Jehoiada ordered two guards to take Jezebel outside the temple and kill her.
Once he was king, Joash had all Athaliah's temples of Baal destroyed. He ordered the great Temple to be repaired and had a chest placed beside the altar, so that people could leave money offerings to God inside it.
But in time he too did wrong and God punished him. The Syrians invaded Judah and Joash was killed by his own servants.
